From ER/Studio Data Architect
Jump to: navigation, search

Thank you for using ER/Studio Data Architect, previously known as ER/Studio, the award-winning data modeling application for logical and physical database design and construction. ER/Studio Data Architect's (ER/Studio DA) powerful, multi-level design environment addresses the everyday needs of database administrators, developers and data architects who build and maintain large, complex database applications.

ER/Studio Data Architect's progressive interface and processes have been logically organized to effectively address the ease-of-use issues that have plagued data modeling tools for the past decade. The application facilitates your ability to create, understand and manage the mission-critical database designs within an enterprise. It offers strong logical design capabilities, bidirectional synchronization of logical and physical designs, automatic database construction, accurate reverse engineering of databases, and powerful HTML-based documentation and reporting facilities. Before you use ER/Studio, please read the information below.

Important ER/Studio DA 17.1 Build 10279/10286 Notes

ER/Studio Data Architect 17.1 Build 10286 is now available. Users who previously installed version 17.1 Build 10279 are encouraged to upgrade to the latest build to resolve two issues listed in the Bug Fixes and Known Issues section of this topic.

Note that because it's a replacement build rather than upgrade, you must uninstall the previous 17.1 Build 10279 before installing Build 10286.

Important Installation Notes

  • To install ER/Studio Data Architect on Windows 10, 8.1, 8, or 7, you must have administrative privileges. Once you have installed ER/Studio DA, you can then log in as a standard or limited user and use the application without having administrative privileges.
  • In order to run ER/Studio DA, you must provide valid licensing information.
  • When you install ER/Studio DA, certain files and directories that were previously stored under the Program Files folder are now by default installed to system-specified application data directories.
  • During installation, the following directories are created:
    • For Datatype Mapping Editor files, which is also the default location for user-generated Datatype Mapping files:
      C:\ProgramData\IDERA\ERStudioDA_XXXX\DatatypeMapping
    • For Automation Handler files, which is also the default location for sample macros:
      C:\ProgramData\IDERA\ERStudioDA_XXXX\Macros
    • For sample model files, for which a shortcut is generated in the ER/Studio DA program group:
      C:\ProgramData\IDERA\ERStudioDA_XXXX\Sample Models
  • When the application is run for the first time, the following directories are created by ER/Studio DA:
    • Directories used by the Repository client to transfer files to and from the Repository server:
      C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\IDERA\ERStudio\RepoIn
      C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\IDERA\ERStudio\RepoOut
    • Default directory for Report files:
      C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\IDERA\ERStudio\Report
    • Default directory for SQL scripts:
      C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\IDERA\ERStudio\SQLCode
    • Default directory for Quicklaunch files:
      C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\IDERA\ERStudio\XML
    • Default Save location for new diagrams:
      C:ProgramData\IDERA\ERStudioDA_XXXX\Sample Models

Important Release Advisory

Note regarding installing on Windows 10

In some situations, background tasks may cause the installation to appear as though it has stopped, even though the progress on the setup window is indicating 100%. In these instances there may be a popup message indicating that a restart is required to finish installation. However, that message may be hidden behind the setup window. Try pressing ALT + TAB to bring the message to the foreground and answer to restart your computer and finish the installation.

Ensure Repository Sync

To ensure compatibility with ER/Studio Repository synchronization, this version of ER/Studio Data Architect requires ER/Studio Repository version 17.0 for all Repository operations.

ER/Studio Portal is no longer supported by ER/Studio Data Architect. Most functionality formerly provided by ER/Studio Portal is now provided by ER/Studio Team Server. Users who formerly used the Repository tab to browse the portal can use a Web browser instead.

License Enforcement

When working with the Repository, all users must use the same license type. ER/Studio now enforces this by marking the Repository as an Enterprise Team Edition Repository when a user with an Enterprise Team Edition license logs in. Subsequent log in attempts by users with a non-Team Edition license are not allowed.

Bug Fixes and Known Issues

Use your browser Find feature to locate a particular bug number or click a link below to see the issues addressed in a specific build.

Bugs Fixed in ER/Studio Data Architect 17.1.0 (Build 10286)

ERS-26946 Corrected an issue causing relationship lines to lose positions upon close.
ERS-26875 Corrected an issue causing entities to display only an N rather than NULL or NOT NULL.

Bugs Fixed in ER/Studio Data Architect 17.1.0 (Build 10279)

ERS-26743 Corrected permissions so that "No Access" users are unable to create projects in the project center.
ERS-26725 Corrected an issue where special Portuguese language characters, such as Ç, Ã, Á, and É, caused definition errors in generated DDL Generation Wizard within the SQL preview window.
ERS-26687 Corrected DDL generation of comments to fileter RTF tags.
ERS-26623 Corrected an issue that did not allow users to access specific projects or diagrams, even though they belong to at least 1 group that has access.

Corrected permission logic to allow access if any group the user belongs to has access.

ERS-26543 Corrected issues with copy/paste of domains that contained RTF formatted definitions and notes.
ERS-26515 Corrected an issue in Change Management Center which was allowing "no access" users to see projects they should not be able to see.
ERS-26507 Enhancements to support TLS 1.2 connectivity to repository, including bulk inserts. This required custom code to work around a bug that is present in SQL Server.
ERS-26487 Added named support for SQL Server 2017 with same capabilities as SQL Server 2016. Thus, the 2017 can be explicitly selected for physical database generation.

Reverse engineering now shows it as SQL Server 2017. Previous versions would have shown it as SQL Server 2016.

ERS-26486 Corrected a regression bug that was allowing entry of duplicate reference values in the editor.
ERS-26442 Fixed issues where RTF tags were showing in submodel definitions within generated reports.
ERS-26434 Fixed issues where RTF tags were showing in object definitions rather than the plain text rendering of the definition.
ERS-26410 Corrected a MetaWizard bridge parameter that restricted creation of data lineage flows.
ERS-26394 When comparing to a SQL Server database during compare and merge, some columns were being returned with the default datatype rather than the actual datatype.
ERS-26363 Updated the help version referenced in documentation.
ERS-26344 Corrected an issue with the repository service intermittently stopping when running under LDAP login.
ERS-26332 Corrected an issue with view validation messages being invoked during file save operation.
ERS-26289 Special characters, such as Portuguese characters with accents, are now generated correctly in DDL comment statements.
ERS-26268 Corrected situations where ER/Studio professional clients were sometimes able to connect to Enterprise Team Edition repositories.
ERS-26256 Corrected intermittent error in saving models to repository when data movement properties were added to lineage diagrams.
ERS-26194 Corrected issue with some words getting truncated in "comment on" DDL generation if they contained special characters.
ERS-26182 Ending bracket in DDL script that has a call to sys_guid() no longer truncates the closing bracket.
ERS-25876 Corrected an exception that occurred when deleting a collapsed BDO from the drawing surface.
ERS-25762 Fixed an issue in some instances that caused incorrect parentheses placement in DDL for default values.
ERS-25741 Fixed connection to help text for layout editor.
ERS-25634 Forward and reverse engineering support is added for MongoDB 3.2, 3.4 and 3.6. These versions use the WiredTiger storage engine.
ERS-25535 Fixed an issue causing DDL generation in some instances to truncate the default values clause.
ERS-25489 For MongoDB, the list of target platforms was showing Mongo DB 2.4 only, even though 2.6 and 3.0 were also supported and certified. This is corrected in the platform list.

Note: The later MongoDB versions utilizing WiredTiger are shown as a separate entry. (See ERS-25634)

ERS-25488 Hive connection list was showing Hive 0.12 rather than Hive 0.12, 0.13

Note: You can connect higher versions with the same functionality but aren't specifically named. Future enhancements will list additional Hive versions explicitly.

ERS-25223 Improvements to Hive kerberos authentication and supporting documentation.
ERS-25021 TLS 1.2 connection to repository is supported.
ERS-24173 Corrected connectivity issues in reverse engineering when using authentication type of "LDAP Plain."
