Diagram Layout
Go Up to Introductory Modeling Concepts
You can arrange UML model elements (nodes and links) on your diagram to optimize the diagram layout for viewing or printing.
You can arrange the layout of your diagrams automatically or manually.
To automatically manage the layout of diagrams, the Modeling uses one of the following algorithms: Standard, Hierarchical, Orthogonal, Spring Embedder, Tree, and <autoselect>. Each algorithm has a set of specific options defined on the Diagram Layout page ( Modeling > (level) > Diagram > Layout ) of the Options dialog box (Tools > Options ). See the descriptions of these algorithms and options in Diagram Layout options.
You can apply the same algorithm for the entire model or you can use different algorithms to separate diagrams selecting appropriate (level) branch in the Modeling > (level) > Diagram > Layout tree to set the appropriate algorithm and options in the proper Diagram Layout page for the entire model or to separate diagrams. The selected algorithm becomes effected when you choose the Layout > Do Full Layout command on the diagram context menu.
It is also possible to lay out a diagram manually by moving and resizing nodes and reshaping links.
You can also lay out your diagrams automatically, and then adjust the arrangement manually.
