Go Up to ER/Studio Business Architect Tools

You can do an advanced search of the workspace using this function. Once a search is complete a Results View appears with all matches listed. On this view, you can find where an element resides in the workspace and on which diagram(s) (opened and closed) they appear.

1 Select Edit > Search or press Ctrl+E to open the Search dialog.
2 The table below describes each field of this dialog:
Field Description

Find What

Enter the name of the item you want to search for. A drop-down arrow gives you access to the last ten search strings. You can set a preference for the number of entries in this list.

Find

Click Find to start the search. This button is not enabled if the search string is blank.

Match Case

The search matches the exact case of the search string.

Match whole words only

The search matches a whole word, not partial search strings.

Search In...

You can choose what you want included in the search: Entire workspace, or specific projects, models, and data sources.

Look For

Select an type of items you want to look for: Names (of elements), Descriptions, or Notes.

Limit To

You can choose what types of elements should be searched. This filter limits what types should be included in the search. You have the following options in this tree: Expand: Click ICON EXPAND ALL.PNG to expand all nodes of the tree.   Collapse: Click ICON COLLAPSE ALL.PNG to collapse all nodes of the tree.   Select All: Click ICON SELECT ALL.PNG to select all nodes of the tree.   Clear All: Click ICON CLEAR ALL.PNG to clear all selections made in the tree.

Restore Defaults

ICON RESTORE OBJECT MAPPING.PNGYou can click Restore Defaults to reset all the values back to their original settings.

3 Once you made all your settings in the Search dialog, click Find. A progress dialog may or may not be shown depending on the time it takes to do the search.
4 Once the search is complete, a Search Results view opens.

Search Results View

This view opens automatically after a search is completed if it isn’t already displayed. A Search Result Count header displays the number of found items. The table displays five columns:

Column Description

Name

Name of the element you searched for.

Type

Element type

Description

Displays the descriptive text for the element.

Notes

Displays the note text for the element.

Parent

The element’s owner. This is required if multiple elements appear with the same name.

You can gain access to the commands for the View either through a shortcut menu or the toolbar.

Note: You can set preferences for the number of elements to return, as well as what columns you want to be displayed.

Using the Shortcut Menu

1 Right-click on a populated row in the Search Results view and the following commands are available to you:
Shortcut Menu Item Description

Name, Type, Description, Notes

By default, all columns are displayed. These are toggle settings, so you can select or deselect which columns you want displayed.

Open Search Dialog

Opens the Search dialog so you can specify a new search or modify your existing search.

Find In

Opens a pull-right menu with the following commands: Active Diagram: This command finds and highlights the selected search item in the active diagram. This command is not available if the element exists only in the Model View. All Diagrams: This command searches for the selected search item on all diagrams in the model. The Diagram Usage dialog opens displaying all the diagrams where the element appears. Select the diagram you want to open and click OK. Model View: Finds the selected search item in the Model View tree.

Run Previous Search

The pull-right menu displays the previous searches. Up to ten searches are listed. You can also select the Clear History option.

Filter Results

Opens the Search Results Filter dialog. Use this to refine the search. You can select which types of objects you don’t want to see in the Results view. You can expand or collapse the tree. You can also select or deselect all the tree node items.

Customize Columns

Opens the Customize Columns dialog where you select the columns you want displayed in the Search Results view.

Properties

Opens the Property View for the selected search item.

2 Double-click on a search results row and the associated property view is displayed.

Using the Toolbar

The following commands are available in the Search Results view toolbar:

Opens the Search dialog so you can specify a new search or modify your existing search.

Find in Model View

Click this icon to find the selected search item in the Model View tree. This command is not enabled if the item isn’t in the Model View (for example it is filtered, not shown, etc.).

Find in Active Diagram

This command finds and highlights the selected search item in the active diagram. This icons is enabled only if there is a diagram open and something is selected in the Search Results view.   If the selected search item is not found on the active diagram, a dialog opens telling you the element is not found. You are given the option to search for the element on other diagrams. If you click Yes, the Diagram Usage dialog opens.

Find in All Diagrams

This command searches for the selected search item on all diagram in the model. The Diagram Usage dialog opens displaying all the diagrams where the element appears.

Open Property View

Opens the Property View for the selected search item. You can also open the Property View by right-clicking on the search item and selecting Properties.

Run Previous Search

Click the drop-down arrow on this icon to display the previous searches. The settings are included with the search name so you can remember what was searched. Up to ten searches are listed.

Filter Results
