Removes an index from a database. Available in gpre
, DSQL, and isql
.
DROP INDEX name;
- Important: In SQL statements passed to DSQL, omit the terminating semicolon. In embedded applications written in C and C++, and in
isql
, the semicolon is a terminating symbol for the statement, so it must be included.

Description: DROP INDEX
removes a user-defined index from a database.
An index can be dropped by its creator, the SYSDBA
user, or any user with operating system root privileges.
- Important: You cannot drop system-defined indexes, such as those for
UNIQUE
,PRIMARY KEY
, andFOREIGN KEY
.
An index in use is not dropped until it is no longer in use.
Example: The following isql
statement deletes an index:
DROP INDEX MINSALX;
